CBD and Covid 19

CBD and COVID 19

Researchers recently set up research into how CBD and Covid 19 affects patients who use medical Cannabis or CBD products.  At the same time, a team of Israeli researchers have launched clinical trials to see if CBD is an effective treatment for viral infections such as Covid 19.  These developments come in the wake of the largest flu-like pandemic to hit the world since the last SARS epidemic.

The World Health Organization ("W.H.O") reports that 3.58 million people have already been infected by the virus worldwide, and out of these, 243,476 have died as of May 4, 2020.  The U.S. has been hard hit by the virus, with over 1.2 million reported COVID cases so far, and close to 70,000 deaths, and the cases are still on the rise.

While the recovery rate from the flu-like disease is high, it is hard to ignore the fact that it is highly infectious, and devastating, especially to the older population, and people with pre-existing conditions.

Researchers admit that the process of DNA synthesis to create an effective coronavirus vaccine can take months, and even years.  However, the current prevention measures, which include social distancing, stay-home advisories, and lockdowns, will not be sustainable for such a long time.

Perhaps, by skipping the traditional route in resolving novel disease epidemics, and including alternative medicines such as CBD, could shorten the length of time that this virus will keep the world at a standstill.

Understanding Covid 19

Researchers can only figure out the effectiveness of CBD in Covid 19 intervention by understanding the virus and the effect it has inside the human body.  Here is what we already know about the virus.

  • Coronavirus is medically referred to as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus.  The Covid viruses were classified as a human pathogen in the 60’s.

  • Other pathogens that belong to the Coronavirus family are SARS-CoV, which first broke out in 2002, infecting over 8,000 people and MERS-CoV, which broke out in 2013 and mainly affected Middle Eastern countries.

  • However, the Covid 19 strain was just recently discovered (actually SARS CoV-2).  The strain was first identified on the 31st of December last year, and what was thought to be a manageable case has turned into a full-blown worldwide pandemic.

  • A few people, mainly those with comorbidities, experience severe symptoms, sometimes leading to death.  However, most people get a mild sickness and recover within a few weeks.

  • The virus is mainly transmitted through droplets of saliva and other body fluids emitted when one sneezes, blows their nose without covering themselves, or otherwise touches surfaces with contaminated hands.  The virus can stay alive outside a host cell for several hours to several days.

The Structure of the Coronavirus

The coronavirus has a unique molecular structure.  The structure includes an external spike protein that facilitates the entry of the virus into host cells.  The virus enters the host cell in two stages:

  1. It uses its S1 sub-unit to bind to the receptor on the surface of the host cell.

  2. It uses its S2 sub-unit to fuse with the cell membranes of the host cell.

The Origin of Coronaviruses

Coronaviruses are known as Zoonotic viruses.  These are viruses that are transmitted from animals to humans.  In the case of Covid 19, some scientists believe that their original hosts were bats.

Usually, the reservoir host’s body learns how to adapt to the virus.  Unfortunately, when there is a vector between the host and humans, these viruses can be transmitted.  For example, the monkeys were the vector for the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus or HIV.

At this point, it is not yet clear how humans got the SARS-CoV-2 virus, whose reservoir hosts were purportedly bats. More evidence is being discovered and shared indicating that this variant may indeed be an unnatural, manipulated virus.

Coronavirus Symptoms

On average, the symptoms take between five and six days after infection to show up.  However, the incubation period can last for up to 14 days.  Here are some of the symptoms listed by the World Health Organization as an indication one could be suffering from coronavirus.  The first three are mild symptoms, however, as the disease progresses, the symptoms become more severe.

  • Fever

  • Dry cough

  • Fatigue

  • Aches and Pains

  • Congestion inside the nasal cavities

  • Runny nose

  • Severe vomiting and diarrhea

  • Loss of smell

  • Headaches

Possible Serious Complications Caused by Coronavirus

Preliminary research into Coronavirus indicates that people with a weakened immune system are more likely to suffer severe health complications.  These include:

  • Pneumonia in both the lungs

  • Multiple organ failure

  • Failure of the respiratory system

  • Cardiac health complications such as rhythm complications

  • Opportunistic bacterial and viral infections

  • Acute injury to the kidneys

  • Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).... blood clots

  • Secondary infection

The most common of these severe health complications is acute respiratory failure (ARDS), which leads to the necessity of putting patients on respiratory support.  Currently, no treatment has been approved to combat or prevent coronavirus.

It is from understanding these facts about Coronavirus that its possible to do insightful research on CBD oil, and the potential it holds in treating the virus.

How CBD Helps To Prevent Covid19 Symptoms

CBD is one of the cannabinoids which have been found and isolated from the Cannabis sativa species and the hemp plant Cannabis ruderalis).  The main chemical found inside the cannabinoid is cannabidiol, which is known to interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system and help the body regulate a number of functions.

While CBD has its own list of benefits that can be useful in preventing serious flu virus symptoms, it is the original and organic terpenes added back to CBD oil that is the main point of focus.

Terpenes and CBD Oil

Terpenes are naturally occurring compounds that are abundant in hemp and Cannabis plant species as well as most plants for that matter.  During the CBD extraction process, cannabidiol is separated from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and over 100 other cannabinoids.

The only chemical that remains in the pure form of CBD oil is terpenes.  The Cannabis plant contains over 200 types of terpenes, which gives it the characteristic smell and flavors.  Here's a list of the most beneficial terpenes:

Full Spectrum CBD Oil

Pinene:  Alpha pinene is mainly found in pine needles, but also present in CBD.  It has been used for centuries to combat various illnesses.  It has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory effects.  The benefit which makes it ideal for treating Coronavirus symptoms is that it is a Bronchodilator. In case a patient is having respiratory difficulties from severe Covid 19, CBD can help to clear the airways and simplify breathing.

Linalool:  Most people are familiar with these terpenes because of its floral aroma.  It is common in aromatherapy products. Linalool adds potency to CBD as an anti-anxiety medication.  People suffering from Covid 19 suffer from anxiety that worsens with inflammation, and CBD could help ease these symptoms.  When the body relaxes, it is able to recuperate and fight the virus.

D-Limonene:  These terpenes are abundant in lemon fruits.  They are added to CBD oil because, among other things, they boost the absorption of other terpenes by the body.  Limonene is also a mood booster and very effective in fighting inflammation. Covid 19 does lead to a lot of inflammation, something eased by limonene in CBD oil.

Caryophyllene:  These terpenes have a woody and spicy aroma.  It is one of the main terpenes added to CBD oil because it interacts with the body’s Endocannabinoid system the same way CBD does.  It also acts as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent. Patients suffering from Covid19 have numerous types of body aches and pains, having CBD with these terpenes added could ease their pain and also reduce the level of inflammation.

Myrcene:  Myrcene is also common in CBD oil.  They have an herbal, earthy, and dank flavor, and give the oil that Cannabis entourage effect.  Even though they are the smallest terpenes found in CBD oil, their effect is quite significant.  Myrcene causes the sedative and relaxing effect you get from CBD and also interacts with the brain’s opioid receptors, which helps relieve pain.

Terpenes cause the ‘entourage effect’ which is common with CBD oil users.  Further research could help determine how effective CBD oil canada can be as therapy for people suffering from SARS CoV-2.

Novel Terpene Medications

A novel medication that could be of great help to the spread of Covid19 is very promising.  A study on the effectiveness of terpenes found in CBD to treat SARS revealed that terpenes effectively reduced the severity and impact of the virus in the body.

Ideally, the medication will be made breathable, which increases the absorption rate, and also has a direct impact on the respiratory system often worst hit by the Covid 19 virus.

CBD Oil Administration to Prevent Covid 19

One of the best ways to deal with viral infections is to strengthen the body’s immunity beforehand.  When the immunity strengthens, your chances of successfully fighting off the infection increase.

CBD is 100% non-toxic, non-psychoactive, and non-addicting and will work naturally with your Endocannabinoid System which in turn has been shown to help regulate your immune system.  A minimum daily adult dose is recommended at 50 mg.

Summary

As COVID cases continue to increase worldwide, nations are implementing various measures to curb its spread.  Due to CBD’s valuable health benefits, many are wondering if it can help to contain COVID 19 symptoms.  Studies reveal that it has potential and could help in boosting the body’s immunity.

Fortunately, CBD and Covid 19 as a supplement is available both locally and in online stores like Cannabis Animus which focuses on Nano CBD.  But before using CBD, make sure to do your research because not all products worthy of your expense.  More studies on CBD will help reveal its role in managing COVID 19 as well as other flu-like viruses.
